I have a new category to add (cheeky me telling you what to do): Music DVDs. If that makes sense. You know, dvd's of bands where they play live and stuff? Especially ones that are kid friendly/ but interesting to adults.... i know you've got lots of them greg..Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00023635255538348472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886734.post-34845906536279480862010-01-04T12:30:28.177-06:002010-01-04T12:30:28.177-06:00I care Greg. By the way this is Jonas.

I haven't heard the new Converge, but I have heard good things about it. I don't know why I haven't listened to it. It is most likely because I have almost given up on metal as a genre. I feel like it has become predictable and boring, but there have been a few good releases this year that I have been really into. The new Chariot album was awesome, and the best metal album of the year in my opinion would be Coalesce's OX album, followed by their OXep as a close second. If you haven't heard either, you should definitely check them out, because they are amazing.

I have never heard Del Castillo, but i will surely check them out.

As for the rest of your top 5 list I have to say that I was a little disappointed with mewithoutYou's new album. I like it, but it is vastly different and does not grip me like Catch For Us the Foxes or any of there previous albums did/do.

Let me start this paragraph off by saying that I really do enjoy the Monsters of Folk album, and I listen to it frequently. However, I must say that I was expecting much more from this release, and I like the parts of this band better than the whole. I really enjoy Dear God, and Temezcal. I think those are the best songs on the album. I wish that they had done something completely different than the music they usually make, like they did with Dear God. Instead it kind of comes off as watered down versions of what they do in their other bands.

I think Jim James' album of George Harrison covers (titled Yim Yames - Tribute To) that came out this year (even though it was recorded in 2002) was much better. I also agree with you on M.Ward. His album Hold Time is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year.

Bands that I thought put out stellar albums that aren't on your list include:

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion & thier ep Fall Be Kind. Both of these albums are amazing. Very futuristic music made with almost all synth yet very attainable, and catchy.

The Antlers - Hospice. This album is very depressing (but you wouldn't know it if you just listened to the music), yet very well done. Synth and guitars mixed.

Built to Spill - There is No Enemy. I love these guys, and they are the best at what they do which is straight up guitar rock. I don't think this is their best album (keep it like a secret will always hold that title) but this album is like listening to old friends who are completely comfortable with each other jamming out.

David Bazan - Curse Your Branches. I enjoy this album even though he has lost his faith, and is angry at God.

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca. This album is indie rock R&B, and I must say that I really enjoy it. Great vocal runs, and interesting compositions.

Girls - Album. This is really great rock. Very Elvis Costello-ish. They aren't really doing anything new, but they make solid music that you can sing and dance to.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatamist. This is probably my favorite album of 2009. If you haven't heard it you should because it is awesome.

Mt. Eerie - Wind Poem. This album has been described by the artist as his black metal album. It is mostly acoustic, but definitely has that black metal feel. Kind of lo-fi and haunting.

I already mentioned Coalesce and M. Ward. That about sums it up.

I also really enjoyed A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, and don't know how so many people in the christian community have still never heard of Don Miller. He is by far my favorite living christian author.

Hope you enjoyed this.

Jonas.

p.s. feel free to tell me that I'm full of crap.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
